HQ:
Secret. Alert Force Mansion located in Newark,
New Jersey. A huge two-story mansion on a sizeable piece of
property, which had a large lake. The mansion had an extensive
.undergound lab, infinnary, and Danger Room
PLOTLINES:
Marauders:
A group of super powered
humanoids known only as the Marauders, whose sworn pledge was to
rid Earth of every mutant, set their sights on Alert Force. After
all, several team members were mutants, and the others were
targeted by the Marauders simply for associating with them. The
combat started at Alert Force mansion in New Jersey, where Loup
was grievously injured (damn near fried) by Sabretooth, Ice
Avenger was incapacitated by Frenzy, and Jack was actually
defeated by Polaris. Alert Force was able to retreat and regmup,
and lured the Marauders to a final showdown atop a high-rise in
New York City. In a rare showing of true malice, Alert Force
carefully planned the encounter in or'::ler to bring about the
deaths of each of the Marauders. When the dust cleared, of the
Marauders, only Malice and Sabretooth escaped with their lives.
Alert Force
Hunted by FBI:
During the five year period
between Era I and Era 11(1982-1987), Ice Avenger had witnessed his
wife's murder at the hands of renegade agents of the FBI, working
for the inventor. As a result, Ice Avenger killed the agents
responsible, and thereby became a hunted criminal. After Ice
Avenger was able to regather the remnants of Alert Force from
across the globe, he purged me FBI of the renegade agents. Alert
Force was cleared, but their reputation as criminals remains in
some areas to this day.
Fantastic Mexican Adventure:
Alert Force was asked
by the Fantastic Four to aid them in fighting oft a robot allack on a
civilian population, just outside Mexico City. Alert Force agreed, and
travelled with Reed Richan::ls and his team to the area. The attack was
more like a minor war. The robot force was attacking local villages, and
was causing tremendous loss of life. Alert Force and the FF worked with
the Mexican Army to coordinate counterattack plans. While there, several
Alert Force members adopted spanish names, and became favorites of the
army. Loup Garou was El Lobo," the Wall became "El Tren," Thermo was
"FrioCalor," and the Protector was, of course, "El Protector." Eventually,
in the final climactic battle, almost all of the soldiers were killed, and
all the heroes were stunned into unconsciousness, when the Wall grew to
his maximum size and attacked the master robot until it exploded. Even
with so many military casualties, the civilian reas were saved, and Alert
Force was hailed as "Heroes of Mexico.
AlertForce Hunted by Avengers:
After Alert Force moved to New
Jersey, certain team members who shall remain nameless (to protect their
anonymity, we will simply refer to them as Jack and Dread) broke into a
high- security storage facility of the United States Mint in Washington,
D.C. This act, coupled with Ice Avenger's then status as a federal
fugitive, caused the government to ask the Avengers to aprehend the team.
This time, Alert Force was overmatched, and had several run-ins with the
Avengers, which led to several retreats by Alert Force and several Alert
Force members being captured before the team was dea red of the charges
against them.
Death of Dr. Feldon:
The Inventor had kidnapped the
team's mentor, Dr. Feldon. Acting on erroneous information, the team
infiltrated a low-security Viper installation in a misguided attempt to
gain the Doctors release. Although they did not find the Doctor, Jack was
able to use the on-site Viper computers to gain enough clues for him to
deduce where the doctor was being held. Much to their sorrow, Alert Force
arrived too late. The Inventor stalled them with a lifelike android, and
gave himself just enough time to complete his gruesome experiment which
took Doctor Feldon's life. The Inventor had been attempting to store human
brain patterns in a computer, thereby storing the lifeforce and
personality of an individual. His experiment was a partial success, and a
demented portion of Doctor Feldon's intellect and personality lives on,
jumping from computer to computer, one step ahead of Alert Force. Dr.
Feldon exercisee mind control over certain exmembers of Alert Force
for a certain time, until in a climactic battle, they were turned back to
the good side. This adventure is rather inaccurately portrayed in the
following ten-page comic:
Para-Man returns:
All had thought Para-man had
perished when he could not be located (even by Jack) when the
group reformed in 1987 (Era II). To the contrary, however,
Para-man had been possessed by Malice sometime after the Marauder
affair. Para-man returned years later, infiltrated Alert Force,
and opened the defenses, allowing his new allies, the Destroyers,
to attack. The attack was repelled by a dazed Alert Force, but not
before Malice had jumped from Para-Man to Dreadnought to Jack,
wreaking havoc on the team. Malice again escaped the clutches of
Alert Force.
Death of the Destroyers:
In Era I, the Inventor had
founded the super villain group called the Destroyers, consisting of
himself, Hypno, Rubber Band, Slither, Typhoon, Fire&lce, Pounder, the
Catburgler, and Jim Jett. After the group disbanded, the Inventor went mad
and began his experiments with androids and human intellect stored in
computers. His ultimate creation, the Invented, was a human mind,
criminally insane, amplified by the speed of an invincible android's body.
It went on a killing spree, slaying all of the Inventors old allies (some
of whom may currently be alive, due to the timestrea rn/history shift
caused in Era Ill by the Time Pirates). Even when some of these old
enemies approached Alert Force for help, the Invented could not be stopped
until after the last of the Destroyers had met his doom.
Mr.
Lucky:
Alert Force was stalked by a
nearly invisible, certainly undetectible, malevolent entity who
had the ability to escape via uncanny luck. He attacked Alert
Force mansion itself, shot Ice Avenger in the back and neck, and
escaped capture by the other team members. Another encounter
occurred in downtown New York City, and "Mr. Lucky," as Alert
Force named him, barely escaped again when Jack of all Trades
slipped on a skateboard which came rolling into his path just as
he closed in on the fiend. The criminal was never captured. His
murderous spree, which included mostly mutants, ended several
months later, and Alert Force could never pick up his trail.
Discovery of the old Guard ian Headquarters in
Pittsburgh:
After Alert Force was cleared of
the charges which the Avengers were hunting them over, Captain
America himself actually asked Alert Force to help the Avengers.
The Avengers had been appointed by the government to act as
custodians over an old cave which had once acted as the
headquarters for a superhero group in Pittsburgh during the late
sixties. The Avengers had left the lair undisturbed, but had
placed motion sensors throughout the old HQ complex. Captain
America informed Alert Force that the motion detectors had been
set oft, but that the Avengers were being called out of the
country on urgent business. He asked Alert Force, as a favor to
him, to check out the disturbance in Pittsburgh. When Alert Force
arrived, they discovered the hideout, covered in dust. To their
surprise, they also uncovered five tubes, used for cryogenic
suspended animation of humans. Two of the tubes were empty,
recently vacated by the looks of things. One had been shattered
beyond repair. The final two had malfunctioned, and the bodies of
sixties heroes and Guardian members Midknight and Lone Star lay
rotting therein. While investigating the canisters, Alert Force
heard a disturbance from down the hall. When they ran to
investigate, they stumbled upon a slightly dazed Wall, battling
the lithe Shadow Warrior in the hangar. Both attacked Alert Force.
An interesting battle ensued before it was determined that no one
present really meant any harm to the others. It was eventually
discovered that Shadow Warrior had broken into the lair, selling
oft both the alarms and the automatic revival system which had
brought the Wall out of his deep slumber. The Wall was a member of
the Guardians, and one of the empty tubes had been his. He could
not explain how he got into the tube, or the condition of any of
the other tubes. Besides the outmoded (but still functioning)
computer system, the only thing of value in the caves was a Model
3 Avengers Quinjet (which had been given by the original Avengers
to the Guardians back in the sixties), which was actually still
usable. Alert Force took the jet back to New Jersey to effect
repairs. The Wall and Shadow Warrior both decided to join Alert
Force. However, the Wall's first action after joining was to steal
the Quinjet, retrieve the bodies of his colleagues Midknight and
Lone Star, and launch them into orbit in the Quinjet set for auto
pilot.
MEMORABLE
SUBPLOTS:
Protector joins the Hellfire Club:
The team leader in Era II was
the Protector, a mutant with aspirations to power. He sympathized
with Ice Avenger's desire to protect mutants, but thought Ice
Avenger was going about it all wrong. The Protector was courted by
the ultra secret super society of mutants known as the Hellfire
Club, to join them as their White Bishop. The temptation
eventually became too great, and the Protector left Alert Force to
join the secret sooiety. No member of Alert Force has seen the
Protector since his last goodbye.
Lt
Spumone:
One of the greatest contacts
ever made by Alert Force was NYPD detective Lieutenant Joseph
Spumone. Spumone had the uncanny talent of knowing just what was
about to happen, and was always able to provide some vital peice
of information at just the right time. Alert Force formed a
tenuous relationship with Lt. Spumone, and he helped the team many
times. When asked just how he could predict events with such
accuracy, or just how he knew some crucial fact, Spumone's reply
would always be: "It's my job to know these things."
Thermo's Marriage:
Thermo's marraige to millionaire
socialite Mary Q. Contrary was the media event of the decade. After Alert
Force was cleared of criminal charges in 1988, their reputation as heroes
didn't grow fast, but their celebrity did. Everyone who was anyone
attended the outdoor ceremony at Alert Force Mansion in New Jersey. The
hit of the evening was when Tony Stark got drunk and fell in the pool.
Loup's Drug Addiction:
Loup Garou's battle with
Sabretooth early in Era II resulted in wounds far deeper than
anyone in Alert Force realized at the time. Although his powenful
regeneration healed the scars relatively quickly, no one but Loup
knew that the intense pain lingered for months. To hide his pain,
Loup took ever increasing amounts of mophine. His mutant body
built up a tolerance to the drug so quickly that he soon was
taking doses which by all rights should have killed him. His
deteriorating psychological condition, accelerated by the death of
his lover, Christine Spar, eventually resulted in a suicide
attempt which was thwarted by the Wall.
Loup/Protector hunt Sabretooth:
Loup Ga rou and Protector joined
forces to hunt down and kill Sabretooth. Unknown to any other team
members, they hatched a plan by which Loup would act as bait to lure
Sabretooth into the open, then the Protector would blast him with his
mental wave, the only power which Sabretooth was vulnerable to. The plan
worked all too well. Sabretooth was killed by of his fonner victims.
The
Black Lotus Restaurant:
Ice Avenger and Shadow Warrior
entered into business together, and opened an oriental cuisine restaurant
called The Black Lotus. It achieved a certain level of success, before
going belly-up due to the disappearance of Shadow Warrior, who ran the
restaurant on a daily basis.
Jack
vs. the Protector:
Jack of All Trades was always
rebel ious. He was always tolerated by both Ice Avenger and
Dreadnought when they had each been team leader, because of his
unique abilities. However, during Era II, when the Protector
became team leader, he would not tolerate Jack's insubordination.
Their conflict came to a head dunng a caper involving the
Riddler's break-in of a New York museum. Jack and the Protector
disagreed on Jack's role in the plan of attack, and the two
actually came to blows on the roof of the museum. Although Ice
Avenger and Loup Garou rallied the team to capture the Riddler and
thwart his robbery attempt, no one knows the outcome of the epic
battle which must have occurred on the roof, since neither had any
visible bruises, but neither would talk about the conflict
afterwards, either.
Mantis' wet car:
Bug had a Porsche which he had
restored, and which was his pride and joy. One night, when Lou p, Speed
Demon, Jack, Protector and Ice Avenger were drunk, they drove the car up
an ice ramp and landed it in the mansion pool. When he discovered what had
happened, Bug immediately accused Dreadnought (the only one who had
nothing to do with the act). The ensuing battle took out half of the front
wall of the mansion and cost millions in repair work. The irony of it is,
Bug may be finding out whom the real culprits were for the very first time
when he reads this!
Mantis vs. Speed Demon:
Bug always took a great deal of
pleasure in being the fastest Alert Force member. When Speed Demon wanted
to join the team, Dreadnought didn't like the look of him and wanted to
get rid of him. He told him he could only join if he could beat Bug in a
race. Unfortunately, Speed Demon was a very one-dimensional character,
with only one power, at a very high level. He literally blew Bug oft the
track. Bug never lived that down until Speed Demon faded into a vapor and
returned to the nether world.
Speed Demon as Federal Express employee:
Speed Demon had a great career
started when he went to work for Federal Express delivering packages.
Their new slogan became "When it absolutely, positively has to be there in
10 seconds." They offered delivery anywhere in the world in under a
minute.
Shadow Warrior's Death Wish:
Shadow Warrior, being a
Ninja-trained warrior, could not fathom why Alert Force would let those
whom it had defeated live. His training taught that your enemies should be
killed to prevent them from attacking you another day. His teacners told
him, "one harmed by your hand who lives will return, and his strength will
be ten times doubled in revenge." Although Shadow Warrior agreed with the
ideals of Alert Force, he could never conform his methods to theirs.
Eventually, Shadow Warrior left active service with Alert Force. It is
believed that he is somewhere in the far east, dispensing his own brand of
justice.
